[edit] Plot

The episode begins when Squidward‘s day of relaxing and playing clarinet is interrupted when SpongeBob and Patrick pop by for a fun day of jellyfishing. Then, Squidward evades his annoying neighbors by running away to the Krusty Krab and hiding in a freezer. However, things become a little icy when it ends up getting stuck inside for 2000 years. The door finally breaks down after years of misuse, revealing a rock solid squid sickle, but things heat up when Squidward is defrosted by SpongeTron, and is welcome to a Bikini Bottom that is completely chrome. Even in the future, Squidward cannot escape SpongeBob, all 486 of them. After realizing where he is, Squidward gets on the ground and delivers the “FUTURE!!! FUTURE!!!” line. Once he comes to his senses, he has guided toward a time machine to return to his own time period. Then Squidward thinks the only way to be free of SpongeBob and Patrick, is to go to the past. He is then transported to a prehistoric bikini bottom with strange plants and spooky creatures. Just when he thought he was alone, he runs into Patrick and SpongeBob‘s primitive ancestors. In an effort to distracted to Squidward, ironically invents the sport of jellyfishing. His time in the past is quickly over after his clarinet playing throws the two ancient sea creatures into a frenzy. Then Squidward accidentally breaks the Time Machine and is transported to an alternate dimension. This is where things get really bizarre. The blank of this of emptiness is the perfect place for him to finally be alone… like really, really alone. It’s not long before Squidward gets super freaked out, landing himself back in the Time Machine. He even admitted to missing SpongeBob. Squidward makes it back to his home and is greeted by Patrick and SpongeBob. Even after all of his adventures, he still doesn’t want to jellyfish. He then gets embarrassed when SpongeBob and Patrick say that Squidward invented jellyfishing.

[edit] Trivia/Goofs

  • This episode is paired with Karate Choppers.
  • This is the first episode for many things:
    • The first episode to use an animated title card.
    • The first episode where the words in the title card move (have the “jiggle” effect.).
    • The first episode where a time card is read out.
    • The first episode where the opening credits do not appear on an underwater background.
      • "Reef Blower" also applies technically, but it does not have any opening credits for that matter.
    • The first episode where SpongeBob does not play a major role.
    • The first episode where the Krusty Krab appears without Mr. Krabs, as it was closed at that time.
    • The first episode where Aaron Springer is a storyboard director instead of a storyboard artist.
    • The first episode to air on a holiday (New Year's Eve).
    • This and its sister episode "Karate Choppers" are the first episodes to fall under 2 million viewers, as well as the lowest-rated episode of the series until "Sanctuary!," which earned 1.28 million viewers on its premiere.[13]
  • This episode would receive a follow-up/sequel in season 14 titled PL-1413.
  • The episode, which arises from Squidward time traveling and inventing the game of jellyfishing while seeking to avoid SpongeBob and Patrick as they want him to jellyfish with them, is an example of a time paradox known as a causal loop, in which a person is inspired or driven by an event to time travel and, whether or not intentionally, causes the event which will facilitate their initial time traveling trip.
  • This is the first episode where the title card is voiced over, something that won’t happen again until Trident Trouble. This is also one of the 13 episodes in which the title card has an animation. The others are Pre-Hibernation Week, One Krab’s Trash, Idiot Box, SpongeBob Meets the Strangler, Skill Crane, Ghost Host, Karate Island, All that Glitters, The Donut of Shame, The Krabby Kronicle, the aforementioned "Trident Trouble," and "PL-1413," respectively.
  • The episode parodies the black comedy Futurama, where Fry, the main character, was frozen in December 31, 1999 and was released in the future. Squidward is also frozen into the future.
  • The calendar in the future says AD March 6, 4017. This suggests that the present day scenes are set on March 6, 2017.
  • The words "past" and "future" switch places from when Squidward first enters the time machine and when he enters the past. Additionally, nothing is written on the lever when Squidward "falls" into the time machine near the end of the episode.
  • When Squidward first arrives in the "Nowhere" zone, he has his clarinet. But when he begins running frantically, he does not hold his clarinet. When he falls through the roof of the time machine, the clarinet is back in his hand.
  • When Squidward said "alone" in the Nowhere Zone, other voices said it too. These voices are provided by the entire crew of the show.
  • "SB-129" was originally going to be called "SpongeBob 3000".
  • The episode first aired on December 31, 1999. This could be a note on the upcoming millennium and new century.
  • SB-129 was this episode’s production code, and the code was kept.
  • In the video game SuperSponge, Chapter 3 takes place in the prehistoric Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob also uses a similar time machine to get there.
  • When Squidward goes into the can opener room, he looks like a spring. When he enters the time machine, he returns to normal.
  • It is revealed in this episode that the Krusty Krab is closed on Sundays.
  • In real life Squidward would have suffered from hypothermia from being in the freezer for too long.
  • Even though SpongeBob states that the Krusty Krab is closed, the doors are unlocked.
  • When SpongeTron is introduced, a synthesized "futuristic" version of "Cierre Bob Esponja," the regular closing theme of SpongeBob, plays ("Cierre Bob Esponja" is featured in many episodes of the show as background music in addition to its end credits use).
