Plot

SpongeBob wakes up, and realises that it's April Fools Day. He begins the day with pranking his snail, Gary (who cries because he doesn't know it is April Fools Day), then goes to work. Squidward, annoyed by the laughing, looks at the calendar. He is shocked and surprised that it's April Fools Day, and calls Mr. Krabs saying he's sick. Mr. Krabs says that there's some guy in his office who wants to sell Squidward's art. Squidward immediately rushes to his office, only to find that it was a prank. Squidward resigns, but gets his job back after being persuaded by SpongeBob.

SpongeBob is then constantly doing pranks with his tongue, and his laughs really annoy Squidward. So, Squidward does a prank on him. He gets a blob of mustard in the middle of a lasso. SpongeBob goes to clean it up, and the lasso closes on his leg. Squidward chops a nearby rope, which sends SpongeBob flying around getting seriously hurt. Squidward laughs hard out, while SpongeBob cries and run away. The customers aren't happy with Squidward around, so they leave, one of them yelling, "April Fools, JERK!". Squidward has to apologize, but he can't say he's sorry. He thinks of other ways to apologize to SpongeBob, but all fail until he decides to apologize after remembering what happened.

SpongeBob: (Giggles) April Fools!!

SpongeBob: Sure thing.

Tom: Huh? WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY DRINK?!!!!

SpongeBob: You asked for a couple of ice cubes, and I just gave one.

• SpongeBob: (Hugging his own tongue) Your shoe's untied, you don't even have shoes *spongebob laugh* APRIL FOOLS!

Trivia/Goofs

• SpongeBob pulled the following pranks:
  • Tricked Gary into thinking they were going to become peasants.
  • Tricked himself into thinking he would drink many glasses of lemonade.
  • Tricked Squidward into thinking he was artist of the month at the Barnacle Bay Museum.
  • Tricked a person by showing them where the forks are, but pointed to the spoons.
  • Tricked a guy in line into thinking he was two different people.
  • Tricked Tom when he asked for a couple of ice cubes, when SpongeBob gave him only one.
  • Tricked Squidward into thinking he wasn't going to tell anyone that Squidward apologized to him.
  • Tricked his tongue into thinking its shoes were untied.
• The plans Squidward tried to apologize to SpongeBob:
  • Put a message on the paper and putting it in the bottle (However, SpongeBob did not have a bottle opener).
  • Making a phone call by a two cup-floss phone line (However, Patrick used the floss to clean his teeth, so his message did not work).
• This is Sandy's last appearance in Season 1.
• Every time Squidward tried to say "I'm sorry", something funny would happen (His head turns into a donkey's face, his head explodes, etc.).
• SpongeBob's first major accident is in this episode.
• It is revealed that April Fool's Day is SpongeBob's favorite holiday.
• The fish that said "April Fools, jerk" in live appearance is different than the fish that said it in Squidward's memory, because Squidward believes it is his mother.
• Squidward's head temporarily turns into that of a donkey's, or an ass's, implying that he thought he was being an ass. In "Christmas Who?" there is a similar scene, he's saying 'I feel like a...' and then a donkey appears. He says "big jerk!" though.
• In this episode, Squidward suffocates when he apologizes to SpongeBob, but in Pizza Delivery, he normally said "that's okay" to SpongeBob.
• The PIXAR short Mater and the Ghostlight parodies this episode extremely much.
• The episode is a reference to the line ``Fools in Paradise.
