The Time Machine belongs to Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. It just appears in the episode Back to the Past and the short "Lessons Learned". Patrick, given his stupidity, presses a lot of the buttons on the time machine, which sends SpongeBob, Mermaid Man, Barnacle Boy, and Patrick himself, into the past. It is seen again, where SpongeBob and Patrick use it to go into the past a second time. At the end of the episode, it is seen that there are a lot of these time machines, all of which go into the past. In "Lessons Learned," SpongeBob and Patrick use the Time Machine to go back in time and make their younger selves wiser.

Trivia

• Time travel has been depicted several other times in the SpongeBob universe:
  • The Future Krusty Krab in SB-129 has a time machine, though not the one Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy own; in fact, the Future Krusty Krab's time machine is placed within a full room in the restaurant.
  • SpongeBob and Plankton built another, different time machine in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water; this one is built at a restaurant called Taco Haüs.
  • SpongeBob and Patrick use another, but entirely different time machine in the short "Time Machine".
  • The Star Family House featured on The Patrick Star Show has a "time closet," which is a closet with a time machine inside.
