Mr. Krabs moves the Krusty Krab to Goo Lagoon one sunny summer day. Suddenly, a big wave sweeps over the beach, and him, SpongeBob, Squidward, Patrick, and Sandy are all separated and taken to different places all over the sea. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward are sent to a small island where they meet a legendary surfer named JKL, who teaches them how to surf so they can survive the Big One to get home. Mr. Krabs is left to suffer in the sea with his cashier, where he encounters the Flying Dutchman. Sandy is stranded on a very small island in the middle of nowhere, where she manages to get herself to survive and sets out to find SpongeBob and the crew.

Mr. Krabs sees that no one is coming to the Krusty Krab one day, and tries to figure out why. Squidward tells him that the reason is because everyone is at the beach. Mr. Krabs moves his business to the middle of the sea at Goo Lagoon, and he, Squidward, and SpongeBob meet up with Patrick and Sandy. A wave suddenly sweeps them up into separate places: SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward go to an island with young surfers, Mr. Krabs is stranded in the middle of the sea, and Sandy is taken to a small island in the middle of nowhere. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward learn from a surfer nicknamed JKL that they have to survive the Big One, a big wave, to get back home. They practice surfing for some time, then get ready to ride the Big One. Mr. Krabs, meanwhile, encounters the Flying Dutchman, and Sandy goes on a search for the others on a helicopter she built. Meanwhile, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward get another lesson from JKL, meanwhile back in Dutchman's Circle, Sandy crashes from the cash register, meanwhile, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward ride the wave, they see Mr. Krabs and Sandy! Mr. Krabs jumps up while Sandy crashes in Goo Lagoon, the people don't reconize her but then they do, SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward are seen flying on the Surf board and land into Goo Lagoon, and when everyone starts to party, (everyone except Plankton) JKL returns! SpongeBob makes the last sentence saying "Crank it up, Chip!".

The day arrives where SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward have to survive the Big One to get back home. They all topple onto SpongeBob's board, clinging for life. Mr. Krabs washes up to them, and JKL saves him from drowning. Cashy, his Cash register (Formerly Betsy), is lost at sea, so JKL risks his life to get Cashy back and is swallowed up by the Big One. His Last Words Were "Little Dude (SpongeBob) I was born to do this.". SpongeBob and crew return back to Goo Lagoon along with Sandy, where JKL reappears and gives Mr. Krabs Cashy back. A party is then held at the beach to celebrate their return.
