Smelly is an alter ego of Squidward in the episode The Thing. He was covered in cement on a bike ride. He ended up with a leaf on his head and waddled around in Jellyfish Fields. SpongeBob and Patrick raised him as a pet, having no idea that he was Squidward. But he was taken to the zoo. SpongeBob and Patrick rescued him, and found a bunch of creatures that looked like him. So they left "Thing" with them. The cement wore off, and crackled off of him.
