SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special

SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special, also known as simply You Wish, was a SpongeBob special that aired on March 7, 2001. The special featured the debut of Shanghaied.

Host

Patchy the Pirate hosted You Wish. Potty the Parrot and the French Narrator were also featured.

Events

The special started with a introductory segment with Patchy, explaining that the episode was not a typical "land-lubbing cartoon" and had three different endings that the viewers could vote for when prompted by either calling in or using the Internet. This was followed by "Shanghaied." At the moment the Flying Dutchman was about to pick who would get his last wish, Patchy appeared and told viewers to call 1 (800) 624-4094 or go to Nickelodeon's website "and tell us who you be choosing."

After a commercial break (with an additional short Patchy segment), Patchy returned to announce which ending won the vote.

• Patrick Star's ending had him wishing for eternal minty fresh gum.
• Squidward Tentacles' ending had him wishing that he never knew SpongeBob and Patrick, which simply causes him to make their acquaintance all over again.
• SpongeBob SquarePants' ending had him wishing that the Dutchman was a vegetarian with the result that he, Patrick and Squidward are turned into fruit. This ending is the only one that doesn't end with the Flying Dutchman eating SpongeBob, Patrick, and Squidward.

SpongeBob's ending won the vote; Patrick and Squidward's respective endings were shown beforehand. After SpongeBob's ending was shown, a final Patchy segment was shown. In this segment, Patchy explained that when viewers "watch this cartoon land-lubbing style like you usually do, it'll have the ending you picked."

Aftermath

After the special was broadcast, "Shanghaied" was later aired with the Patchy segments edited, with the chosen ending only and was paired with Gary Takes a Bath. On the The Complete Second Season box set and Sea Stories DVDs, the edited version is included as "You Wish/Shanghaied," and the latter DVD includes the alternate endings as bonus features. SpongeBob's You Wish Spectacular Special as originally aired but with the 800 number censored (replaced with the words "Yikes matey! Original 800 number as aired has been retired to Davy Jones locker!") is included on The First 100 Episodes DVD (and the subsequent The Best 200 Episodes Ever and The Best 300 Episodes Ever DVDs) as "Shanghaied (with Alternate Endings)".
