Plot

A TV delivery truck comes and delivers a box with a TV inside it to SpongeBob and Patrick. However, they throw the TV away and jump in the box. Squidward comes and asks what they are doing. SpongeBob and Patrick say that they are using their imagination and ask Squidward to play with them. Squidward refuses and gets the TV from the trash can. Then Squidward hear's them start, it sounds like there mountain climbing in the box. Squidward, annoyed by the sounds, kicks the box, making an avalanche. When Squidward lightly taps the box, it makes an avalanche. Squidward opens the box (After SpongeBob and Patrick explain that their limbs are frozen and they need to cut them off,) and finds out that it was just sound effects. He goes into his house to prove that he has more imagination then them. However, when he gets inside an old hat box, he hears no sounds. Angered, he kicks the box and the sound effects are heard again. Thinking the police were here to arrest him, he goes outside to appolagize. But when he goes outside, he realizes that the sounds are coming from the box. Angered once again, he kicks the hat box right to SpongeBob and Patrick and then Patrick says "Whoopie, another box." Squidward goes back inside to clear his thoughts by watching TV. But when he turns on the TV, the only shows on were about boxes. Again, he hears the sounds. He then imagianes that SpongeBob and Patrick have a tape recorder. He goes outside and tells SpongeBob to give up the tape recorder. (Patrick was inside the hat box at the time.) SpongeBob says that they don't have a tape recorder, which Squidward refuses to believe. Squidward demands that they show him how the sound effects are made. The trio hops inside and SpongeBob and Patrick start saying random robot and pirate phases (beep beep, ahoy matey etc.) with no sound effects heard. Squidward gets out and continues thinking about the box. He comes up with a plan to steal the box while SpongeBob and Patrick are sleeping and find that button. He sneaks inside the box and imagianes that he is a race car driver. To his suprise, it works! However, the sounds were from a garbage truck, picking up the box and taking it to the landfill site. The next day, the two find out that there box is gone. They hope that he is not to down in the dumps today. After that the episode ends.

• Things Squidward watched on his new television:
  • A show about how a box is assembled
  • An old man is describing a box in the form of geometry
  • A man and his wife/girlfriend exchanging gifts (which are actually boxes)
  • A boxing match between 2 actual boxes
• The show that shows boxes being made is similar to the show, "How It's Made".
• In this episode, Squidward pulls a sombrero out of a hat box and says "Why haven't I worn this?" He later then wears that sombrero in The Camping Episode.
• When Squidward thought that the police were there to arrest him, it was actually sound effects about a guy named Johnny fleeing from the police saying, "You'll never get me alive coppers!" This is a spoof on a 1950s James Cagney movie called "White Heat."
• Patrick did not hear any sound effects, but he knows about the second avalanche.
• Squidward says "I hope they put some air holes in that box." However, the residents of Bikini Bottom do not require air for survival.
• In this episode, after SpongeBob told Squidward he can have the T.V., Squidward's mouth did not move when he said, "Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!"
• They seemed to have gotten smaller when they got inside the box.
• When Squidward was being picked up by the Dump Truck, the box was flipped upside down. While he was in it, he remained unchanged.
• When Spongebob and Patrick were both crying inside the box, it is similar to the 9/11 attack insteadly in The Episode Krusty Towers.
• The title Idiot Box is a copy of Idiot Boy.
• This is one of the ten episodes in which the title card has an animation. The others are SB-129, Pre-Hibernation Week, One Krab's Trash, SpongeBob Meets the Strangler, Skill Crane, Karate Island, All that Glitters, The Donut of Shame, and The Krabby Kronicle.

Running Gag: Every time Squidward opens the box, the sound effects stop.

• It might be possibe that at the R.P.I. part of the episode, the sound effects did not activite because Squidward was not using his imagination and SpongeBob and Patrick were.
• When Squidward opens the box the last time, the hat box was beside SpongeBob. But in the next shot of inside the box, the hat box is nowhere to be seen
