King Poseidon

King Poseidon is the main antagonist of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and its adaptations, alongside being mentioned in "SpongeBob's Director's Commentary", multiple episodes, and Squidward and the Golden Clarinet. He is the ruler of Atlantic City, has a golden clarinet, and is the namesake of both Poseidon Elementary School and the Poseidome Colosseum. His Roman counterpart is King Neptune.

Looks

Poseidon is a large and elderly teal merman, similar in appearance to various other mermen and mermaids in the series. In his true appearance, he is gangly and flabby, with skinny arms and a rotund potbelly. He has a small black pencil mustache, a bald scalp, and a toothless mouth. In order to appear more imposing, he dons a disguise consisting of a regal black wig, and numerous pieces of jewelry, among them a large golden belt which keeps his tummy pressed in like a girdle. He also appears more muscular in his disguise.

Personality

King Poseidon is a vain, flamboyant, self-centered monarch whose life mostly revolves around his looks as he believes that his facial features are what makes him a true king. Poseidon is very lazy because he refuses to do actual kingly duties and he overworks Chancellor, refusing to pay him. He is also somewhat comedic as he overreacts to one unrecognizable wrinkle on his face in an over-the-top manner. He also had anyone who dare stand up to him executed in a flamboyant stage show.

It is eventually revealed that his personality is largely a result of him not having friends. When SpongeBob offers to be his friend, he has a change of heart.
