Patrick inducts SpongeBob into his prestigious society of dullards and doofuses.
Patrick and Spongebob go to Patrick’s club, the Empty Head Society, a society of the dumbest people in Bikini Bottom (many of whom are only seen in this episode). Spongebob wants to join, but first he must prove his lack of smarts to be inducted to the club. After removing his brain, being smacked in the face with a board, and chugging a jar of spit, SpongeBob joins the club. The Empty Heads soon leave to do their “civic duty”, infamously known to Bikini Bottom as “the Nitwitting”, in which the club destroys much of Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob eventually wants to leave the club, and Patrick helps him regain his normal intellect.
Help Wanted is the opening, pilot, and debut episode of Season 1. It is about a sea sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants who wants a job at a local restaurant, the Krusty Krab. But before he receives his job, he must pass an almost impossible test.
Plot
SpongeBob's foghorn alarm clock rings, waking him up in the morning. He tells his pet, Gary the Snail that he must be in good shape because this particular day is important. He jumps off of his diving board and lands in his pants. He goes to his exercise room and lifts a bar-weight (which is actually two stuffed animals). Afterwards, SpongeBob exclaims that he is ready.
He runs outside and down the street to the Krusty Krab, repeatedly saying, "I'm ready" while his neighbor and best friend, Patrick Star, cheers him on. SpongeBob sees the 'Help Wanted' sign on the Krusty Krab window. He then declares that he is ready to obtain the job, which he has been dreaming of for years; however, he loses his confidence. Patrick convinces him to apply for the job, and so SpongeBob does, thereby declaring he is ready three more times. Squidward Tentacles, the head cashier, is cleaning the window (above his head the word 'loser' is written on the glass pane). Squidward sees that SpongeBob wants the job, and so he tells restaurant-owner Eugene H. Krabs that SpongeBob does not qualify for the job. SpongeBob walks into the Krusty Krab and asks for the job. To get rid of him, Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that he can join the 'Krusty Crew' if he passes a "test"--which is to obtain a 'Hydrodynamic Spatula with Port and Starboard Attachments and a Turbo-Drive'.
As soon as SpongeBob leaves, six buses drop off a large crowd of hungry anchovies. They barge into the Krusty Krab, demanding Krabby Patties. Attempting to keep things in order, Squidward complains about their behavior and then requests that there be a single-file line in front of the cash register. But the anchovies vehemently protest, forming a riot of angry anchovies set to resemble a stormy sea. This forces Squidward and Mr. Krabs to climb up the 'mast'. Suddenly, SpongeBob arrives, flying by with his 'Hydrodynamic Spatula with Port and Starboard Attachments and a Turbo-Drive'. Mr. Krabs is flabbergasted at the fact that SpongeBob actually passed the "test". SpongeBob flies into the kitchen and satisfies the needs of the angry anchovies by making a huge amount of Krabby Patties.
When the last anchovy gets its Krabby Patty, Mr. Krabs is delighted. He hires SpongeBob by welcoming him to the Krusty Crew and giving him a name tag. At the end, Patrick walks in and asks for a Krabby Patty, which causes SpongeBob to race into the kitchen and make a huge stream of Krabby Patties, which then hits Patrick and sends him flying out of the restaurant & Squidward begins yelling to Mr. Krabs, saying, "Mr. Krabs! Mr. Krabs! Mr. Krabs, come see your new employee.".

Animation style
This episode is the first, so it has many differences to the rest of the series. However, the original version of the episode had many other minor differences corrected later. For example, this episode (along with Pickles, Employee of the Month, and One Krab's Trash) is the only episode where SpongeBob's bed is on the right. Differences in voices are another example. SpongeBob's voice is slightly lower and Patrick's is deeper. Designs and colors are also different. For example, SpongeBob has fewer holes than in newer episodes and brighter yellow skin, Mr. Krabs' eyelids are pinkish red opposed to red, Mr. Krabs' left (right from our perspective) eye winks while he laughs, Squidward's complexion is brighter, his laugh is different, and the comedic "splat" sound is different. Gary's eye pupils and irises are smaller with a different tone of voice in the "meow" (although Tom Kenny claims to use a new "meow" for each episode where Gary is shown meowing). Squidward also appears to have rows of sticks behind his house. Differences in SpongeBob's house are also present in this episode, but not in others, such as there is only one window in the front. Also, SpongeBob's alarm clock has the same ship horn sound but echoes. The changes were made when the series officially aired.

A Goof + A Gaff = A Laugh
*In the "written by" section of the opening credits, Stephen Hillenburg is incorrectly spelled as Stephen Hilleburg.
*Tiny Tim's "Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight" is featured in the episode.
*During "Living in the Sunlight, Loving in the Moonlight", Tiny Tim sings "Just take it from me, I'm just free as any daughter", but the captions read, "Just take from me, I'm just free as any brother".
*The animation was not as high quality unlike the following episodes, as the rapid movements made by SpongeBob. When he was bouncing off the walls, roof, and floor of the Krusty Krab it just showed a yellow square. When the anchovies were jumping up and down they were just blue and brown (mostly blue) finger-shaped ovals.
*Initially, the debut episode was not included on the SpongeBob season 1 DVD set, presumably because of music licensing issues involving the aforementioned song. However, the episode has since been made available on the DVD release of the third season as a bonus feature, and on the 10 Happiest Moments DVD as a bonus episode.
*Squidward, Mr. Krabs, Patrick, and SpongeBob all have a different tone in skin color than in other episodes.
*Mr. Krabs' eyelids are pink in this episode. In every other episode, they are red.
*SpongeBob couldn't have cooked the Krabby Patties because Mr. Krabs hasn't given him the formula yet.
*In this episode, Gary's eye pupils are red dots, but in further episodes they are black dots in red dots.
*It's unknown how SpongeBob got into the Krusty Krab when the door was blocked by anchovies.
*This is the first episode to use traditional cel animation
*A Gastropod first meaw because they are equivalent to cats, rays have not shown yet.
*Tiny Tim died about 3 years before this episode premiered. He died on November 30, 1996.
Plot
SpongeBob eats a rotten Krabby Patty, which causes him to hallucinate and see a giant, fluffy hamster named Cuddle E. Hugs, who introduces himself as SpongeBob’s “new best friend”. The two walk around town, but SpongeBob is the only one who can see him. Patrick is jealous and is thrown into a fit of rage. Sandy can’t see him either. So SpongeBob begins selling “Aged Patties” in a booth at the Krusty Krab, eventually causing everyone in the restaurant to see and cherish Cuddle E. Hugs. He turns evil, however, and begins eating customers and terrorizing the Krusty Krab. Later, after waking up and finding they were no longer being eaten alive by the giant hamster, everyone leaves except for SpongeBob, who visits Cuddle E. one more time, this time feeding him a rotten Aged Patty and apparently sending Cuddle E. Hugs back to being a regular hamster in a cage.

Trivia/Goofs
*This is the fourth episode to air as part of You Bring the Color Week.
*Cuddle E. Hugs reveals the “E” in his name stands for “Eat” after devouring Krusty Krab patrons.
*Patrick, jealous of Cuddle E. Hugs being Spongebob’s “new best friend”, shouted, “Give me his love!” toward what he perceived as Cuddle E. Hugs. However, love that belongs to SpongeBob cannot be given away by anyone other than SpongeBob, because Love is an invisible concept and not a concrete noun.
*Squidward did not eat the Aged Patties, thus he could not see Cuddle E. Hugs.
Mr. Krabs wants to make money on the “horse” idea, but when Patrick doesn’t want to cooperate, he contractually forces Squidward to be his new horse and engages Spongebob in a race. ==Plot==
At the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs makes “Krabby soup” out of ingredients he intercepted on the way to the garbage. Outside in the cold are three hippies sitting around a thermal vent behind the building, who Mr. Krabs attempts to drive off, but gets his head stuck in the thermal vent itself and does not see the hippies go in the Krusty Krab and jump into the mystical soup. Spongebob attempts to add ingredients to the soup, but finds they keep disappearing. After unknowingly somehow dishing the hippies into customers’ soup bowls, the customers are thrown into a rage and demand refunds. Mr. Krabs looks to see what has happened to SpongeBob in the kitchen, who suspects the soup is haunted, and finds the hippies slipping into his soup vat. After several failed attempts to make them leave his soup, he sends SpongeBob down on a ladle, and finding him turned “full flower child” as well, gives up the effort. When SpongeBob leaves the soup to talk with Mr. Krabs, he finds the restaurant closed down and Krabs turned to a hippie living in the abandoned building. Spongebob convinces him to re-open the Krusty Krab, and the hippies are moved to a new home- Squidward’s bath.
Sandy takes her Science Scout troop on a trip to the moon. Squidward is also brought along by a Krabby Patty delivery to Sandy’s dome at the time of the launch. While on the moon, Spongebob pulls the moon out of its orbit and further from the Earth and Squidward ventures to the Dark Side of the Moon, where he crashes into a displeased Santa Claus. The Science Scouts try to move the Moon back into orbit by belch power, wind power, and pushing it, which are all unsuccessful. Santa plans to help by pushing the Moon with a Jack-in-the-Box, but Spongebob causes further destruction by overwinding it and completely destroying the Moon. Spongebob is then left in space as a replacement Moon until Christmas.

Cuddle E. Hugs is a character that appears only in the episode Cuddle E. Hugs.
Cuddle E. Hugs was actually the result a hallucination which was induced by eating rotten “Aged Krabby Patties”. The “E”, it was revealed, stands for “Eat”.

Appearance/Personality
Cuddle E. Hugs was a giant fluffy hamster with a small green hat. He was initially nice to Spongebob (being the only person who could see him) and became his “new best friend”, which provoked Patrick’s jealousy and sent him into a fit of rage at nothing. Cuddle E. Hugs later appeared to everyone in the Krusty Krab when SpongeBob sold everyone Aged Patties, causing the same hallucination. Cuddle E. Hugs then turned into an evil version of himself with sharp teeth and began devouring the customers. After apparently sleeping off the effects of the patties, everyone left, unable to see him anymore. Spongebob later met with Cuddle E. Hugs again (where he revealed “E” in his name was for “Eat” because he’s always hungry) and fed him an Aged Patty, which turned him back into a regular hamster in a cage.
69.129.172.109http://en.spongepedia.org/index.php?title=Cuddle_E._Hugs_(character)Cuddle E.

Appearance
King Patrick has a purple robe, a royal scepter, & crown (given to him in beginning of the episode).
