The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a feature film based on Nickelodeon's hit TV show SpongeBob SquarePants. The film was released in the United States on November 19, 2004. It was distributed in Switzerland, Spain and Netherlands by Universal Studios. The Movie was supposed to be released in November 4, 2004. The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie was the second most successful Nickelodeon production, only behind The Rugrats Movie.

Plot
The film begins with a live action credit sequence, in which a group of pirates retrieve tickets to The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. The film then cuts to Bikini Bottom, where amidst chaos, Mr. Krabs, the boss of popular fast food restaurant the Krusty Krab, has a problem: a customer who ordered a Krabby Patty got it without cheese. Suddenly, SquarePants, the manager, comes to the rescue. With his briefcase full of James Bond-like gear, he takes out a piece of cheese, slowly puts the cheese in the Krabby Patty and then SpongeBob saved the day. The whole scene reveals itself to be SpongeBob's dream.
Meanwhile, Mr. Krabs is preparing the grand opening of the Krusty Krab 2, which is an exact replica of the original. Hoping to become the new manager is SpongeBob, the Krusty Krab's head cook.

Plankton, arch-nemesis and business rival of Mr. Krabs, who constantly wants to steal Mr. Krabs' formula to the Krabby Patty, is planning his ultimate final plot, the dreaded Plan Z. At the opening of the Krusty Krab 2, SpongeBob's lazy coworker, Squidward, is given the manager title instead; as Mr. Krabs tells a heartbroken SpongeBob that he is too immature and childlike to handle the task.
Meanwhile, Plankton arrives at the castle of King Neptune, who is prevented from declaring a ridiculous prison sentence by his intelligent teenage daughter Mindy. Neptune is then horrified to discover that his crown is missing, having been stolen by Plankton.

SpongeBob arrives at Goofy Goober's, a popular children's restaurant, to brood over his loss. His best friend Patrick arrives and joins him in a Triple Gooberberry Sunrise (ice-cream) eating spree and SpongeBob experiences hangover-like symptoms the morning afterwards. Meanwhile, Neptune arrives at the Krusty Krab after receiving false evidence of Mr. Krabs stealing his crown. SpongeBob arrives and insults Mr. Krabs out of spite, but then decides to try to save him from being executed. He and Patrick agree to travel to the dreaded Shell City, where Mr. Krabs has allegedly sold the crown, and return with it. Before departing, Mr. Krabs is frozen solid and Mindy, who Patrick develops a crush on, gives the duo a magical bag of winds to return home with. This is a reference to the Odyssey.

With six days to retrieve the crown, SpongeBob and Patrick's hamburger-like vehicle, the Patty Wagon, is stolen by a gangster. Later, they find it parked at the Thug Tug, a bar for tough, muscular fish. Unable to obtain the car's key, they begin to blow bubbles, which is a sign of weakness by the rules of the gang. A fistfight as to who blew the bubbles results, allowing them to steal the key amidst the confusion and depart. The following day, Plankton begins controlling the minds of the townspeople through electronic bucket-shaped hats, disguised as free souvenir hats, ultimately taking over Bikini Bottom and re-naming it "Planktopolis." He also sends Dennis, a motorcycle-riding hitman, to eliminate SpongeBob and Patrick.

SpongeBob and Patrick are then chased by a large sea monster, ultimately ending in the death of the monster and the loss of their car. Unable to pass through a monster-filled trench, SpongeBob gives up and accepts the fact that he and Patrick are just children. However, Mindy arrives and gives them fake mustaches in the form of seaweed, convincing them that they are now men. They pass through the trench without fear, but are greeted on the other side by Dennis. He reveals that they are not really men before being stepped on by a human scuba diver, who takes SpongeBob and Patrick to the surface.

He takes them to Shell City, which is revealed to be a gift shop that sells novelties made out of dried sea creatures. SpongeBob and Patrick discover the fish within the shop, but are completely dried up by being placed under a heat lamp to dry. However, their tears electrocute a wire and cause the sprinkler system to activate, reviving them and all the other sea creatures, who lead an assault against the diver. The duos take the crown and flee, but Patrick ends up using the bag of winds the wrong way, losing it. However, David Hasselhoff arrives and takes them across the ocean at a jet's speed.

Dennis arrives, however, and attempts to crush SpongeBob and Patrick with his boot, but is hit by an oncoming boat. As the duo arrive over Bikini Bottom, King Neptune is about to execute Mr. Krabs, but is stalled by Mindy. Hasselhoff opens his pectoral muscles and shoots the duo into Bikini Bottom, where Krabs is saved and Hasselhoff is burned by Neptune's trident. However, Plankton's hypnotized minions attack the heroes, and SpongeBob makes a speech about maturity before breaking out into a bizarre rock song out of the mussel inlads (parodying Twisted Sister's song "I Wanna Rock"); using his guitar's powers, SpongeBob destroys the mind-control Bucket heads and frees the citizens from Plankton's rule, who is then sent to jail.

In the aftermath, Neptune reaches an understanding not only with Mr. Krabs but also with his daughter, and then thanks SpongeBob and Patrick. Finally, Squidward gives SpongeBob the title of manager, much to his delight.

Characters
*SpongeBob: A happy yellow sponge who fry cooks at the Krusty Krab and goes to get King Neptune's crown (Main Protagonist).
*Patrick: A happy pink starfish who loves to be friends with SpongeBob (Second main protagonist).
*Squidward: A lazy, grumpy, ugly octopus who orders the food at the Krusty Krab. He has a minor role.
*Mr. Krabs: A greedy but understandable and kind crab who owns the Krusty Krab. He was frozen by King Neptune.
*Sandy: A land squirrel who's friends with SpongeBob. Sandy has an extremely very minor role and her home is not seen.
*Mrs. Puff: A pufferfish who's always losing her temper on SpongeBob. Mrs. Puff has a very minor role.
*Gary: SpongeBob's pet snail. He was controlled by Plankton to rebuild Planktopolis from Bikini Bottom. Gary has a very minor role in this movie.
*Plankton: SpongeBob's arch nemesis. He takes over Bikini Bottom and is the main antagonist and villain of the film.
*Dennis (eliminator): A hitman determined to murder everybody in the sea (The minor antagonist_.
*King Neptune and Mindy: The rulers of the sea. Mindy is kind and not yet the ruler, Neptune is a furious mermaid.

All other characters have been controlled under Plankton's Evil Plan Z and the Buckets Head Control. Pearl Krabs, the huge whale, daughter of Mr. Krabs, has also been controlled by Plankton because she does not appear anymore after she says the word A Goofball? and then the movie will never connect to her again. Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy do not appear in the movie, although there is a poster of them in the beginning of SpongeBob's house. Sandy, Mrs.Puff, Gary, and Pearl all have
only one line. Squidward had few lines, and he had a large length of absence between the Mind-Controlled Slaves capturing him
to having him fan-waving Plankton to being rescued by SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab 2.
Trivia
* "Goofy Goober Rock" is a re-work of "I Wanna Rock" by rock band Twisted Sister.
* The film takes place after the series, even though it was created before Season Four, Season Five, Season Six, and the future Season Seven.
* The song sung by SpongeBob in "Best Day Ever" was sung in the last song of the end credits, by SpongeBob. It is also sung, again by SpongeBob, in the episode titled Best Day Ever at the beginning and towards the end of the episode
* When SpongeBob and Patrick are at Shell City and the sprinklers go off, there is a puffer fish. It could possibly be Mr. Puff, Mrs. Puff's husband.
* In the bar scene at Goofy Goober's, a cartoon of Ignatz beaning Krazy Kat in the head with a brick can be seen hanging on a wall in the background.
* The band Motörhead contributed the song "You Better Swim" to the soundtrack, which is "You Better Run" with 'sponged-up' lyrics.
* The tune to "Now That We're Men" can be heard throughout the episode "The Great Snail Race".
* This film was rated PG by the MPAA for some mild crude humor, for the fact that Patrick's bare butt is seen (with a flag in it) using his pants as a parachute, and Patrick is seen without pants on, and Mr. Krabs is audible in whispering "jackass" to SpongeBob.
* At the end, SpongeBob says Squidward's fly is down. Squidward does not wear pants.
* This film was originally planned to serve as the series finale of SquarePants, but in 2005, an unannounced Season 4 was produced due to the film.
* Most of SpongeBob's friends do not have a large role. Gary, Mrs. Puff, Larry the Lobster, and Sandy the Squirrel were brainwashed for a majority of the film and had one line each. Mr. Krabs was frozen for most of the movie, and Squidward had few lines and was much less pessimistic than he was in the series, seemingly taking on a new personality for the film. Also, in an interview, the film mentioned to have Sandy, but she only made two appearances and only one line. Originally, there was a scene that involved Sandy (as a real squirrel) meeting SpongeBob and Patrick on land, but it was scrapped from the film. It can be seen (storyboard-animated) on the DVD of the film as a deleted scene.
*The Replica HMS Bounty was used in the opening sequence in which the pirates were singing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song.
* The Best Day Ever marathon was parodied by an Ed, Edd n' Eddy marathon called The Best Day Edder.
* 364 Employee of the Month awards from 1999 is 2030, which means that this movie takes place in March 2030.
*The distance between the two Krusty Krab restaurants keeps changing throughout the movie.
*In the Goofy Goober Nut Bar, the pictures hanging on the wall behind SpongeBob change in every shot.
*SpongeBob puts his shirt and shorts clothing on after his dream, and he is wearing underwear. Then, in front of the mirror, when the back of the shorts falls down, it shows his rear end with no underwear.
*The "Galley Grub" sign in Krusty Krab 2 moves from above the door with a porthole in it, to next to the door with the anchor painted on it, and then totally disappears later.
*After SpongeBob and Patrick receive their "seaweed mustaches" they jump off the edge of the trench. When they figure out that they just jumped off the edge they look down, and directly below, the trench wall is visible with nothing on it. Yet, when they are about to hit the ground there is a branch.
*When SpongeBob wakes up the morning after his ice cream antics at Goofy Goober, there is a table and two chairs by the stage which disappear.
*When SpongeBob and Patrick go to the bar on the way to Shell City, there is a hole in one of the wooden saloon doors which switches to being in the other saloon door when they sneak out.
*Patrick changed his underwear without going to his home.
*Since the movie takes place in 2030, SpongeBob and Patrick are 44 years old (but acts like kids and is even CALLED kids), Mr. Krabs is 88 years old, Squidward is 55 years old, and Pearl is 38 years old.

Continuity Errors
*The film begins shortly before SpongeBob wakes up. Seemingly only a few minutes later SpongeBob talks to Patrick, before exclaiming it was 8 o'clock, and quickly made his way towards the second Krusty Krab's opening ceremony. Strangely, when SpongeBob finds out that he is not the manager of the new restaurant, he walks off towards the sunset. Unless the ceremony was much later than 8 o'clock (which would be odd, since SpongeBob claimed he was late for work), the day passed by very quickly. A similar error occurs the next day, when SpongeBob says, again, that it is 8 o'clock, and then, at about the same time, Mr. Krabs claims that it is lunch time.
*In the film, King Neptune looks utterly different than he used to be in Neptune's Spatula. (The character is also played by a different actor - John O'Hurley played Neptune on the TV series in his one and only appearance.) The reason why was revealed in Krusty Towers. The Neptune Family Heirs, so this is probably the son of Neptune in Neptune's Spatula or rather that Neptune was portrayed and drawn in a different light, even retconned into a king.
*It is possible that the film storyline takes place after all of the episodes. At the end, SpongeBob becomes the manager of the Krusty Krab 2, but, even in the new episodes, the Krusty Krab 2 does not exist and SpongeBob is still a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Also, in the new episodes, Plankton is still trying to steal the formula, but in the film, he is putting his final plan into play. It has been confirmed by Stephen Hillenburg this was actually the series finale, despite the fact it was released before seasons 4-6. This is likely due to the fact that the show's future was unclear at the time (the movie airing just before the two year hiatus) and so it seemed likely the show was cancelled.

Plot
Mr. Krabs is making a commercial for the Krusty Krab and Squidward direct it. When Mr. Krabs finds out how much money Squidward is using, he decides to direct it himself. SpongeBob only has two cameo appearances in the commercial. After the commercial airs, SpongeBob thinks he is famous after he is addressed by Old Man Jenkins (who he mistaken for the cereal box in a commercial for Bran Flakes). Then he hears two fish talk about "Freddy Flounder" and how he should cut a solo record, but SpongeBob again thinks that they are talking about him. He quits being a fry cook and starts entertaining, much to the chagrin of the customers and Squidward. When SpongeBob tries juggling, he accidentally slips and falls on the ground. Just as he thinks that his career is over, a patty drops on the grill. However, the customers are pleased, and SpongeBob actually makes Krabby Patties for them without knowing he is acting as a fry cook.

Trivia/Goofs
*In this episode, SpongeBob is called a cereal box. SpongeBob was also called a cereal box in the episode Pre-Hibernation Week.
*The second Krusty Krab disappears for the rest of the episode.
*Mr. Krabs is shown with his pet worm, Mr. Doodles for only the second time in the series (the first time was in the episode Sandy's Rocket).
*The second Krusty Krab is similar to the "Krusty Krab 2" from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. It should be noted that this episode was released two years before the film.
*The background music playing during the commercial is the same as on the title card.
*In this episode, SpongeBob sang "Striped Sweater" in his normal voice. Usually, he would change his voice in uncommon situations, like singing. In Welcome to the Chum Bucket, he also sings in his normal voice.
*The crowd, in unison, asked for "onions and cheese!" but no cheese was being shown placed on the patties.
*A Krabby Patty was being shown flipped up in the air at the exact end of the episode, but froze in mid-air a split-second before fade-out.
*At the end of the episode, SpongeBob puts a load of Krabby Patties on the Grill. In the next shot, the amount lessens. Next, there is only five. Then there is six.
*Closed-captioning error: near the beginning of this episode, Mr. Krabs says to Squidward "What in Neptune's name is going on here?" However, the captions said "the toons' name" instead of "Neptune's name."
*The German title of the episode is "Der Fernsehstar". In English, it Means "The TV Star".
*When SpongeBob is told he was seen on TV by Old Man Jenkins, his outline turns straight.
Places
*Squidward's House
*Outside SpongeBob's Neighborhood

Plot
Squidward is proud of having just finished his wax sculpture of himself and declares he has "conquered all artistic medium" (referencing a large diversity of art styles and reproductions of famous pieces which all have Squidward for subject). While he goes to take a bath, SpongeBob and Patrick throw a shell with which they are playing frisbee into Squidward's house, and it hits the sculpture. SpongeBob and Patrick think they've injured Squidward, and after several humorous attempts to "resuscitate" him, they believe that Squidward is dead. Squidward, fresh from his pampered bath, dramatically emerges in a rush of steam from the warm bathroom, wearing talcum powder and a white bathrobe and towel. SpongeBob and Patrick believe they are seeing Squidward's ghost and, hoping to avoid any haunting or punishments, place themselves as Squidward's willing servants. Squidward gleefully takes advantage of the situation, having them serve and pamper him, do chores, and simply entertain him. Eventually, SpongeBob and Patrick, while entering a "messy" room, come across a comic book inspired by the story of the Flying Dutchman (who haunted the seas because his body was used as a window display in a clothing store), and decide that since Squidward is a vengeful spirit, he needs to be put to rest. Thus, SpongeBob and Patrick try to give him a proper burial as well as a funeral. Squidward eventually admits his charade, but SpongeBob and Patrick believe that Squidward is simply in denial about his death. SpongeBob blows a giant bubble that engulfs Squidward and sends him floating up to 'the great beyond'.

Trivia/Goofs
*The episode's name is a takeoff on Casper the Friendly Ghost.
*This is the only episode where Squidward's house is depicted with an elevator in it, which would allude to Squidward having a high income or simply the house having a convenient feature.
*When Squidward asks, "What are you invertebrates doing?" SpongeBob and Patrick seem to make up a nonsensical game having to do with (presumably among other things) chess boards, bubbles and rocks. *SpongeBob and Patrick say, "We don't know." This may be a reference to Calvinball, a game played in the defunct comic strip Calvin and Hobbes.
*When Squidward asks, "What are you invertebrates doing?" to SpongeBob and Patrick, it seems that Squidward is insulting them about not having a backbone. However, Squidward is a cephalopod, making him an invertebrate as well.
*When Squidward is on the royal bed, you can see that Patrick's house is missing.
*When SpongeBob says "Oh look, the mourners have arrived," original closed captioning said "Look, the mourners."
*SpongeBob has lighter holes on his front face, but an extremely trivially stronger(darker)colored holes on the sides of his head in Squidward, the Unfriendly Ghost.
SpongeBob SquarePants is an Emmy-nominated American animated television series and media franchise. It is one of Nickelodeon's "Nicktoons" and is the most watched show on Nickelodeon of all time. In 2007, it was named by TIME as one of the greatest television shows of all time. Although its original network is Nickelodeon, SpongeBob is now broadcast across the world. It was created by former marine biologist and animator, Stephen Hillenburg, and is produced through his production company; United Plankton Pictures, Inc. SpongeBob has also appeared on sister network MTV2 for a short time in 2006.

The series is set in the Pacific Ocean, in the city of Bikini Bottom and on the surrounding lagoon floor. The pilot episode first aired in the United States on Nickelodeon after the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999. The "official" series premiere followed on July 17, 1999 with the second episode, "Bubblestand/Ripped Pants."

Created by Stephen Hillenburg
Animation Directed by Tom Yasumi

Setting
Conch Street
SpongeBob SquarePants is a sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, while his octopus neighbor Squidward Tentacles lives in an Easter Island head. SpongeBob's other neighbor and best friend is a pink starfish named Patrick Star, who lives under a rock. SpongeBob and Patrick live on either side of Squidward, much to Squidward's despair....

Bikini Bottom
SpongeBob and his friends live in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Bikini Bottom is like a regular city with a downtown, suburbs, coastal areas, its own airport, bus system, and Fair Park. Stephen Hillenburg said once that Bikini Bottom was loosely based on Seattle, Washington. A good example of this statement is in the episode Pre-Hibernation Week. Sandy and SpongeBob were fighting on a tall structure called the Sea Needle, referring to the Space Needle, a tall structure in Seattle. Stephen has said that he wants to leave the location of Bikini Bottom to the imagination, claiming that the Baywatch scene was just a reference to his favorite show of all time.
Creatures
SpongeBob's house-pet is a snail named Gary, whose "meow" is similar to a cat. Although Gary only speaks in a few episodes, the characters have shown an ability to understand him. In addition to this, underwater worms bark exactly like dogs, and are kept on chains. Jellyfish are the equivalent of bees; buzzing, stinging with poison (although it appears as an electric shock), and producing delicious "jelly", mocking the name "Jellyfish", while still referring to a bee's honey. Fish act as the citizens of the community but, as a rule, are not important characters.
The title character
SpongeBob, who is absorbent, yellow, and porpous, works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant, with Squidward as the cashpier. The Krusty Krab is owned by Eugene H. Krabs (Mr. Krabs). Sheldon J. Plankton (commonly referred to as "Plankton") is Mr. Krabs' arch enemy who owns a low-rank fast-food restaurant called The Chum Bucket across the street from the Krusty Krab. The Chum Bucket has almost never had a customer, and Plankton spends most of his time plotting to steal the recipe for Mr. Krabs' popular Krabby Patty burgers. Only in the movie does he succeed; the formula is never actually revealed to the audience. Plankton's computer wife, Karen, alternately helps him in his schemes or bickers with him.
Sandy
Sandy Cheeks is another friend of SpongeBob. She is a squirrel that lives in an underwater dome in Bikini Bottom. She was sent there by her bosses, chimpanzees. Sandy has a Texas accent and is also from there. When not inside her Treedome, she wears an astronaut-like suit. Sandy, just like a normal squirrel, hibernates once a year, as seen in a few episodes such as Pre-Hibernation Week and Survival of the Idiots.
Descendants
His generation grandchildren, or descendants in the forty-first century are SpongeTron SpongeTron X, Y, Z and all the other 486 of them! Patrick's futuristic person is Patron
Boats
Instead of cars, the residents of Bikini Bottom drive boats. SpongeBob is still in boating school after failing the driving test over thirty-eight times. Once, during an episode set in a wilderness area, Patrick questions how a camp fire is possible on the lagoon bottom. As soon as the question is asked, the fire is immediately extinguished with a sizzle. A flurry of bubbles accompanies actions in many of the episodes to remind the viewer that the setting is underwater. Ironically, when there is a separate body of water underwater, such as a swimming pool or lagoon, a non-car boat must be used to cross it because both SpongeBob and Patrick cannot swim, they must be taught by Larry the Lobster.

Main Characters
*SquarePants — A very friendly and funny sponge that loves jellyfishing. He works at the Krusty Krab as the fry-cook.
*Patrick Star — SpongeBob's best friend, a dumb, pink starfish.
*Sandy Cheeks — A clever Texas squirrel that has to wear an oxygen tank to breathe underwater.
*Eugene H. Krabs — A crab that is in charge of the Krusty Krab restaurant, where SpongeBob works. He is addicted to money and is selfish and greedy.
*Pearl Krabs — Mr. Krabs' teenage daughter. She is a whale who acts like a stereotypical American teenage girl. Her father thinks he's spoiling her when quite frankly he is doing the opposite.
*Squidward Tentacles — SpongeBob's next door neighbor and co-worker at the Krusty Krab, where he is the cashier. He hates SpongeBob and Patrick, and openly displays his hatred towards them, not that they ever truly understood. He believes he is an amazing artist and clarinet player, but quite the opposite in reality.
*Gary the Snail — SpongeBob's pet, his only sound is a "meow", similar to a cat. In fact, he is considered to be a sea cat, like a worm is considered a sea dog.
*Mrs. Puff — Widowed, husband captured and turned into a puffer fish lamp. SpongeBob's puffer fish boating teacher. Mrs. Puff is eager to get SpongeBob out of her class.
*Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy— Old, retired and foolish superheroes who are adored by SpongeBob and Patrick.
*Larry the Lobster — Buff, good-looking and well-fit lobster, usually found at Goo Lagoon, Bikini Bottom's local beach.
*Perch Perkins - The Bikini Bottom TV Reporter.

Antagonists
*Plankton: The main villain of the TV series.
*Bubble Bass: A mean picky fat green fish who appeared in Pickles, F.U.N. and Fools in April.
*Flats the Flounder: The big flat bully who appeared in three episodes: Sandy's Rocket, Texas and The Bully.
*Squidward Tentacles: Only in episode: vs. The Patty Gadget
*Flying Dutchman: The green 5,000 year old ghost who wishes to get revenge on SpongeBob. He is the 2nd Main Villain.
*Mr. Krabs: One of the main characters, but was main antagonist in Jellyfish Hunter, Arrgh!, Krabby Land.
*ManRay: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's most dangerous enemy.
*Dirty Bubble: Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's arch nemesis.
*Kevin the Sea Cucumber: A nerdy jellyfish hunter who thinks SpongeBob is a loser.
*Lord Royal Highness: The king of Atlantis, turned against SpongeBob and friends when Patrick popped the world's oldest bubble.

Popularity
SpongeBob SquarePants is the only cartoon to consistently make the Top 10 list in the Nielsen ratings, and is the first "low budget" Nickelodeon cartoon, according to the network, to become extremely popular. Low-budget cartoons had not garnered as much esteem as higher-rated (and higher-budgeted) shows, such as Rugrats, although when SpongeBob aired in 1999, it had gained a significant enough number of viewers in the ratings to be considered popular, eventually becoming more popular than Rugrats had ever been. SpongeBob follows other Nickelodeon shows that have attracted "older" followers: The Ren and Stimpy Show, Rocko's Modern Life, the Kablam! skits, Action League Now! and The Angry Beavers. Other shows have followed in this trend as well: Invader Zim and The Fairly OddParents won a similar fan base when they aired in 2001, and the latter is now second only to SpongeBob in popularity, while the former was cancelled despite gaining a cult following. The show debuted in 1999, and during that time, Pokémon was still the biggest craze. SpongeBob did not gain its popularity until around 2000, and it has remained popular since then.

Broad appeal
SpongeBob is one in a long line of cartoons that is designed to appeal to adults as well as children. This has a lot to do with the absurd way underwater life and situations are represented, and with the situations, references, and words used, which younger viewers might not understand. Certain innuendos also are intended to go over younger viewers' heads. For example, SpongeBob tried to show his grandma that he was a mature adult by wearing sideburns and a derby, and listening to 'free form jazz' or when Squidward tricked SpongeBob and Patrick into thinking he was a ghost, a coral reef sculpted like Toulouse-Lautrec's can-can girls stands in the background (leading to a pun by Squidward), are jokes most children would not understand. Numerous marine biology in-jokes are woven into the show. There are also often complex ironic scenarios that need close attention.

While many newer cartoons revolve around pre-adolescents with strange lives and feature many pop-culture references (e.g. The Fairly OddParents), SpongeBob chooses to go for a formula that was used in highly successful older Nick cartoons such as Ren and Stimpy and Rocko's Modern Life, with non-human young adults in crazy, unrealistic situations, with minimal pop culture references.

Part of the show's appeal has to do with the childlike nature of SpongeBob and his best friend, Patrick Star, both of whom are adults but display an innocence typical of human children. However, the characters are not immune from more adult avocations, including rock musicianship in a stadium performance, reminiscent of a hard rock concert, or Patrick turning to SpongeBob after they had nurtured a baby clam, holding his arms out saying "Lets have another".

Unlike the Nickelodeon network, SpongeBob features well-known independent musicians who contribute to its soundtrack. Alternative rock bands such as Wilco, The Shins, The Flaming Lips and Ween (who have contributed two original songs to the show and their 1997 song "Ocean Man" to the movie soundtrack), as well as metal bands Pantera, Motörhead and Twisted Sister have made appearances on the show and movies soundtracks, and heavy metal group Metallica even released a T-shirt featuring cartoon versions of themselves playing live with the characters SpongeBob and Patrick. British rock singer David Bowie announced that he will be a special guest on the SpongeBob SquarePants episode Atlantis SquarePantis (aired on November 12, 2007).

The show became so popular with teenagers and adults that the series was broadcast on MTV and featured on Spike TV. A quote by Patrick ("It's gonna rock!" from the episode Mid-Life Crustacean) has been used as a promotional tag-line for rock stations. Ren and Stimpy, among others, had followed a similar path. The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, released on November 19, 2004, features a cameo appearance by actor David Hasselhoff, in a parody of his role from the Baywatch TV series.

The "official" series premiere followed on July 17, 1999 with the second episode, "Bubblestand/Ripped Pants."

*Dirty Bubble:Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's arch nemesis.
*Kevin the Sea Cucumber A nerdy jellyfish hunter who thinks SpongeBob is a loser.

Plot
SpongeBob is watching his favorite show, The Adventures of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. He has entered a competition, and is listening eagerly to see if he's won the mystery prize. The announcer declares the winner as "SpringBoob SquirePin". However, it is actually SpongeBob SquarePants, as the announcer did not "pronounce it correctly".

SpongeBob has won the "conch signal", a conch whose noise is a signal which Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy respond to. However, SpongeBob constantly sounds it in order to get them to do favors.

Annoyed, Barnacle Boy shouts at SpongeBob, who says that he just wants to spend time with them. They spend time together, with SpongeBob dressed as a superhero. In the street, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy see an old man, who was once The Atomic Flounder. SpongeBob attacks the old man but is stopped.

At a restaurant, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy ask SpongeBob to find their theme song on a jukebox. They run outside and hope to escape from SpongeBob, but get trapped by The Dirty Bubble. SpongeBob pops the Dirty Bubble with a pencil tip, saving the day. Then SpongeBob, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy sing in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's Invisible Boat Mobile.

Trivia/Goofs
*The song that was sung is a parody of a song about Batman and Robin - of which Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy are parodies of.
*This is the first "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" episode in which SpongeBob appears without Patrick. The second is
Mermaidman vs SpongeBob.
*This was also the only "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy" where the title card has purple waves. The other five have blue waves on the title card. This episode's theme music is also different from other Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy episodes.
*When Mermaid Man tells SpongeBob that, maybe, the conch signal is too much responsibility, the television in his house shows only a red screen, instead of black screen or a moving picture.
*This was the last episode to use traditional cell animation. All episodes from Something Smells onward use digital ink and paint.
*This is the first appearance of the Mermalair.
*When Mermaid Man said "Activate torpedo mode!", regular closed captioning said "Torpedo mode!"
*This is the finishing episode of the memorable first season.
Plot
The episode begins as SpongeBob and Squidward walk to the Krusty Krab, expecting an average day. SpongeBob is telling a story about how he overcooked the fries, which turns out that they weren't overcooked at all. While SpongeBob tells the story, Squidward keeps trying to interrupt him. On the third time, he finally gets SpongeBob's attention, in which he picks him up and shows him the Krusty Towers. SpongeBob immediately wants to know what happened to the building, when Mr. Krabs pops out and states that the building is now open for business. SpongeBob asks why Mr. Krabs built a hotel called Krusty Towers Hotel, in which Mr. Krabs answers with a story.

Mr. Krabs asks SpongeBob if he remembers that fast food convention in which Mr. Krabs went to. Mr. Krabs goes on about the hotel he stayed at the time being. Everything was perfect. The employees were kind enough to everything that Mr. Krabs wanted them to do. That's because they lived by the hotel's code that was "hung above the grand fireplace." It states, "We Shall Never Deny A Guest, Even The Most Ridiculous Request." Mr. Krabs repeats how the place was perfect...until he got the bill. Mr. Krabs had to pay 25 dollars for a hamburger. (The flashback shows him pull the hamburger out of his stomach.) The flashback ends, and Mr. Krabs simply says, "If they can charge 25 dollars for a lousy burger, think about how much I can charge for a lousy Krabby Patty!" Mr. Krabs then states that the Krusty Towers was born.

Squidward then points out that the hotel is in the middle of nowhere, in which all you do is get stung by jellyfish. As if on cue, a jellyfish buzzes by and stings Squidward on the head. Squidward dully says, "See?" SpongeBob pushes the sting mark into his head, which pops out on the other side, where SpongeBob lets out an "ewww." Mr. Krabs tells both employees to come inside. Squidward's first reaction is the location of all the new hotel employees. Mr. Krabs then gives SpongeBob and Squidward hotel uniforms. Not long afterwards, the first customer comes. Mr. Krabs is certain that he'll reel him in, so he heads over and takes care of him. Mr. Krabs tells him the name of the building, then the code that was the same code in which the hotel Mr. Krabs was staying in during the fast food convention. The customer simply asks for a Krabby Patty with no onions and extra pickles. Mr. Krabs tells him that he has to order room service to get it. The customer simply says that he has only an hour of lunch, and leaves. Mr. Krabs has Squidward take over, in which Patrick arrives and asks for a Krabby Patty. Squidward tells Patrick that the building is now a hotel, and that to get a Krabby Patty must require room service. Patrick agrees, and soon signs his name (actually, it was a picture of Patrick as a giant monster) on the register which ends in him getting his room key.

Patrick states that he needs help with his bags. Squidward replies that you just found out that the building's a hotel, and that you shouldn't be able to have bags. All Squidward does is get annoyed by Patrick's response: "This is a hotel?" Squidward tells SpongeBob to take his bags up and get him the Krabby Patty. Mr. Krabs jumps in and tells him to take the bags up while SpongeBob makes the Krabby Patty. After a brief argument, Squidward agrees and goes to the elevator. Mr. Krabs tells him that it's for guests only, and to take the employee elevator. It turns out that it's just a long flight of stairs. Finally, Squidward reaches the hallway where Patrick's room is. Squidward asks Patrick if the suitcases are full of rocks. As if on cue, one of the suitcases open up and rocks pour out. Squidward and Patrick go into a very brief argument afterwards. For a few minutes, Squidward is forced to do Patrick's unreasonable tasks. Finally, Squidward reaches his boiling point, and quits. He then comes back through the doors in an attempt to drive Mr. Krabs crazy. Throughout the remainder of the episode, Squidward does exactly what Patrick has done: giving stupid and unreasonable tasks. (One task involved Squidward's mother.) Squidward then requests an indoor pool. Squidward gets just that, and when Patrick makes a cannonball, the building rumbles and collapses with the water from the indoor pool escaping out of the windows. Coincidentally, the Krusty Krab, which was at the very top floor, is the only floor undamaged even after the collapse finished. The episode cuts to the local hospital, where Mr. Krabs then regrets that hotel, especially after receiving a 15,000 dollar bill. Mr. Krabs adores the place where the "real money" is, and tells everyone else that their going to medical school. Patrick and SpongeBob give a "yay," while Squidward lets out a devastated, "Oh boy."

Trivia/Goofs
*Even though Mr. Krabs said that Patrick, Squidward, and SpongeBob were going to medical school, it never happens. It is likely that Mr. Krabs had changed his mind, forgot about it, or that it simply occurred between episodes.
*The origin of the building is known, while the name of the building is not. It makes reference to the series Fawlty Towers, and when Squidward quits and comes back makes reference to one episode of that series.
*The entire Krusty Krab restaurant can be seen at the very top of the building.
*When the building fell, it looks very similar to how the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11th, 2001.
*The Krusty Towers is 11 stories high.
*After the room is redone with the same thing as the first, the second time, there is an extra lamp added to the room that was not there the first time.
